Why is the cannabis tax so high in Marin County and San Francisco?

Whether you're a recreational user or a medical user with a third-party recommendation, you'll need to pay both your city's sales tax and a California cannabis excise tax. These taxes, which will be computed at checkout, are necessary costs for legal and compliant operations within the California cannabis industry.

However, individuals possessing a medical recommendation issued by the state will not be subject to sales tax, though they must still pay the cannabis tax. If you frequently use cannabis for medical purposes, obtaining a state-issued recommendation might be beneficial.
