Sativa vs. Indica: ONA's Guide to Cannabis Subspecies

Whether you’re a cannabis seedling or deeply rooted in the plant, you’ve likely been asked, “Sativa or Indica?” This question will help pave the way for your cannabis experience. Cannabis cultivation has seen many advancements in the past decade alone, and legalization has increased research, testing, and innovation. Because of this, our options and preferences are now seemingly unlimited. Long gone are the days where you were grateful for whatever weed your supplier had at the time. More importantly, we now have stronger weed, more strains, and multiple methods of consumption that can enhance our experience. It’s truly a great time to be a cannabis consumer!

Here at ONA.Life, we understand that people use cannabis for different reasons. Some like to relax; others like to be active. The beauty of cannabis is that it’s a reflection of our preferences, habits, and even our personalities. That’s why understanding the differences between Sativa and Indica can help you choose the optimal cannabis experience.

What is Sativa?

Sativa is often described as an uplifting head-high used for focus, alertness, creativity, and physical activity. Sativa strains range from a citrus-like flavor profile (Lemon Jack, Grapefruit Haze) to a smoky gasoline flavor (Durban Poison, Sour Diesel). The “head high” you feel from Sativa is invigorating and energizing, making it a popular choice for daytime activities.

Biology

Hot and sunny climates combined with long vegetation periods help Sativa plants grow long and bountiful. Leaves on Sativa plants are also noticeably different from Indica, as they are long-fingered and light green. The actual flower itself has lighter colors with notes of orange and yellow. Sativa plants can grow up to 10 feet tall, and flowering can last between 9-15 weeks.

Effects of Sativa

You may catch yourself feeling bubbly, giggly, and bouncy after consuming Sativa. These desirable effects make strains like Blue Dream and Sour Diesel a favorite among cannabis creatives. The “buzz” it provides allows its user to feel the effects of the cannabis while encouraging activity, even enhancing it. Consuming the right amount can help alleviate fatigue, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. However, consuming too much too quickly could potentially increase paranoia and panic.

What is Indica?

Often nicknamed “In Da Couch,” Indica strains are heavy and relaxing body highs that can make you feel like you’re being sucked into your sofa. Indica strains are popular at nighttime for their relaxing effects and sleep-inducing properties. Flavors range from piney and skunky (Night Sky, Bubba Kush) to sweet and berry-like (Purple Punch, Granddaddy Purple).

Biology

Indica plants thrive in subtropical areas about 30-50 degrees north of the equator, such as Tibet, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Indica plants are shorter than Sativas and can fully grow indoors, reaching a maximum height of about six feet. The leaves on Indica are dark green, short, and shrubby. The buds are dense and tend to be more sticky.

Effects of Indica

For some cannabis newbies, it can be hard to stay awake shortly after having an Indica. While each experience varies, Indicas have a reputation for alleviating stress and insomnia, helping consumers get more rest. Popular Indica strains like Granddaddy Purple and Bubba Kush are top choices for relaxing, especially in the evening or after work. Indica strains are also known for an increase in appetite, so if you would like to avoid getting the munchies, we recommend eating and hydrating before you consume.
